The Chicago Portage National Historic Site in Lyons, Illinois, consists of a historic portage that was first used by French explorers to reach Lake Michigan, which eventually led to the birth of the city of Chicago. Today, this site has been developed into a park area with several hiking trails and canoeing activities. Guided tours of the historic aspects of the site are also available with Friends of the Chicago Portage. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
