Greensky Bluegrass is a bluegrass band from Kalamazoo, Michigan that was formed in 2000 as a three-piece outfit. While recording its debut album Less Than Supper in 2004, the band decided to fill its soundscape by hiring a bassist and dobro player. After the band acquired these two additional instrumentalists, it managed to anchor its jangly sound and gave its live performances depth. Greensky Bluegrass released the first volume of its live album series, All Access in 2009, followed by Volume 2 in 2010. With its refined sound, the band began to reach out to a broader audience, particularly with its fourth and most acclaimed studio album, Handguns. The effort debuted in 2011 at number three on US Bluegrass charts.

Quite the anomaly, Matisyahu is an American Hasidic Jewish reggae musician. He first started making music in 2000 and achieved mainstream success with the release of "King Without a Crown," a single that would go on to receive attention in the U.S. top 40 charts. It might seem like a contradiction for a devout Jew to devote himself to reggae and hip-hop stylings, and though his rabbi likely doesn't approve, Matisyahu is able to pull it off and sound completely original doing it.

Sacramento, California-based trio Tera Melos was formed in 2004 after Nick Reinhart and Nathan Latona's former band No Regard became defunct. Commonly characterized as math rock, the band blends elements of jazz and ambient electronica as well. Though the band initially shied away from vocals after being unable to find a vocalist while all three member refused to sing themselves, Reinhart eventually gained the confidence to sing some lead vocals and the resulting songs were successful. Touring extensively in the US, Tera Melos continues to work to spread its music and sarcastic banter across the country.

Although bluegrass music is typically defined by its layered acoustic instrumentation and traditional approach, Mountain Standard Time leans much more toward the progressive side of the genre, alongside popular groups such as Yonder Mountain String Band and The String Cheese Incident. Beyond the standard mandolin, banjo and acoustic guitar setup, the Colorado-based six-piece also utilizes electric bass, drums, horns and lots of percussion to help create its jam rock-influenced spin on the classic American genre. Thanks to Mountain Standard Time's ability to play long sets of dance-friendly bluegrass fusion, the group has become popular at notable jam rock festivals throughout the United States.
