Billy Orton, minister of music and worship, this years Living Christmas Tree will feature festive arrangements of familiar carols, beautiful settings of new and traditional Christmas music, and, of course, the candlelight processional with singers throughout the spacious FBC sanctuary. In recognition of the Silver Anniversary presentations of the LCT, Mayor Tommy Battle wrote, I am excited that Huntsville is home to this annual event. I know The Living Christmas Tree will be a joyous event filled with wonderful fellowship, beautiful music and inspire strengthened motivation and dedication to your vital roles in your families, congregations and communities. The Living Christmas Tree is a truly impressive structure. Standing 39 feet tall, the tree weighs 6,000 pounds, is dressed with more than 7,500 pieces of greenery and features 13,500 sparkling lights. The tree, with its skeleton resembling an erector set, is constructed in three days by a host of First Baptist members who volunteer their time and efforts in this Yuletide labor of love. It is a church-wide endeavor that includes not just our music ministry, but volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, explained Rev. Orton. The magnitude of the project calls for men, women, girls, boys, carpenters, engineers, decorators, cooks and more. Volunteers cover ticket orders, the parking of cars, ushering, public relationsthe scope is tremendous. Not only is the Living Christmas Tree a wondrous site to see, but the spectacular musical sound of 180 singers and instrumentalists is alive with Christmas spirit. As noted in The Huntsville Times, The enduring program has become one of the areas most popular holiday entertainment traditions even for those who dont attend the church.

»Sister Act (Touring)

January 09, 2015 8:00 PM

Adapted for the stage from the 1992 hit film, Sister Act follows the story of a lounge singer who, after an unlikely turn of events, finds herself in a convent among a group of nuns. When Deloris witnesses a violent crime at the hands of her mobster boyfriend, she enters the witness protection program and is placed in last location any of her old cohorts would find her: a convent. Forced to adhere to the somber and sober life of the church, Deloris clashes with the convent's leader, Mother Superior, but eventually finds her niche with the choir. Through Deloris' leadership, the group of singers is transformed into a soulful gospel choir. The church's attendance and donations skyrocket, attracting the public's attention and subsequently, old problems come to the surface again. Sister Act has been captivating audiences since its 2009 West End premiere with its poignant story line, gripping characters and electric music.
