The name means "thatched roof," and it is hard to miss this one, atop a large Mexican restaurant alongside Highway 290. The casual, spacious interior allows for conversation without noise from the kitchen or too-close fellow diners crowding in. Generous Tex-Mex combination plates are the rule here. Try the satisfying enchiladas and bring the rest home for the next day. You will find nearly fish bowl-sized margaritas from the full bar that are not to be missed, and an all you can eat fajita buffet Saturday nights. Karaoke is offered in an adjacent area on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.
Japanese food, especially sushi, is not hard to come by in Austin, but there are some restaurants that are especially noteworthy. Japon, an award-winning sushi restaurant, is one of them. The restaurant is split into a bar and a restaurant, but those who visit come for the great selection of sushi, particularly for the chef's special roll. For the purist, there are traditional maki, nigiri and sashimi selections to choose from. Those who are craving something different can order the teppanyaki option for lunch and dinner. To add to its great menu, Japon offers coupon deals now and again on their website, giving people even more reason to visit.
Since its opening in 1990, this Indian restaurant has been a local favorite. The tandoori lamb, chicken and seafood specialties are always a good bet, along with several spicy and mild curry dishes. One popular choice is the Barra Kebab (tandoori lamb), marinated in yogurt and spices to enhance its delicate flavor. Plenty of vegetarian entrees are available too. Fresh naan bread accompanies each entree, and wine is moderately priced. Although the atmosphere is somewhat upscale, casual to more dressy attire is acceptable.
Plentiful on-site parking and a variety of free traditional side dishes already makes for a great place to eat, what blows it over the top is that it's Korean BBQ. Come and get a taste of authentic cuisine at Chosun Galbi, nearby the Highland Mall. See the menu online or call ahead for more information.
Nomad Bar is quite an undertaking not too far from Downtown. This place has a trendy atmosphere buzzing around, while the people come here just to have a great time. Most come here after work, while for the rest, it's a regular fun outing. The chairs and tables are over-sized and comfy too. Not to mention the outdoor patio, where the weather feels just right. A potential romantic spot as well. But, this glistening bar is mainly better of for friend circles. It has a great range of premium drinks to select from, while the bartenders are professional thus bankable. The food served here is really delicious. One must try the hummus plate, which you may be surprised by its taste and texture. Occasional live music is just one the best aspects of this bar. A favorite spot for many. This place opens at 5pm.
If you have a hankering for seafood this is the place to go. Red Lobster has a wide variety of good eats for the whole family. Various appetizers, special entrees, drinks and desserts ensure a menu with something for just about anybody. Lunch and dinner menus include shrimp, soups and salads, seafood platters, chicken, steak, and pasta. This house of Vietnamese cuisine has everything going for it but location. If you blink while driving by the Centre North shopping center you might miss it. But once you're inside, Miss Lan will cook up her Special Lo Mein with Stir-Fried Tofu and assorted veggies. Or, for the carnivore, the menu offers ham, chicken, pork or beef sandwiches for around two bucks. Enjoy a standard but comfortable atmosphere with calm music and plenty of smiles from the server.
Burger Tex, and the other three of its locations (E. Anderson Lane, Guadalupe, and W. Hwy. 290) are owned & operated by a jovial Korean-American. Bulgoki (chopped meat marinated in a Korean mixture of soy sauce and sesame oil) tastes great whether in a burger or a Philly Cheese Steak. As an added incentive, the place bakes its own wheat buns twice daily; you may notice their bakery is located on one side of the dining room, and the cooks have to wheel the hot rolls to the kitchen.
T & S is very popular for its authentic Chinese and Asian cuisine. The chic ambience and friendly service put you in the mood for some fun. The Dim-Sum served here during lunch hours is divine and shell crabs are something all visitors must try. In short, this place serves fresh seafood at reasonable prices. This place is always flooded with locals, hence reservation is advisable. Parking facility is available.
Small and quaint is how you can describe this place best. But don't let the small factor undermine the Mexican fare dished out here, you can actually watch them cook. Crowded with hungry students, travelers, local patrons and professionals, the food is delicious but inexpensive. Food includes homemade salsa, breakfast tacos, migas, enchiladas, chalupas et al. You can call ahead and order with the prices, for a whole baseball team. In spite of the demand and queue, service is quick. Credit cards are not accepted.
Curiosity is the tool that Kome has used to entice strangers to its establishment. To the unseeing eye, it is easy to miss until you notice the large wooden letters on the wall. The menu is unique because it has been designed specifically for Kome Sushi Kitchen, and features home-style preparations. The restaurant itself creates some atmosphere of Japanese authenticity by using Japanese names and characters on their notice board, as well as serving their sushi on wooden blocks. This place also attracts natives, hip Austinites, and sushi lovers. It is certainly a hidden gem.
