Tempe, Arizona pop band The Maine formed in 2007 while the members were still in high school. Quickly launching a major label career after two short EPs, The Maine released its July 2010 album Black & White on Warner Bros. The Maine's lyrics speak to their hometown of Tempe and various personal experiences growing up there. More autobiographical than most pop rock bands, The Maine frequently sings about relationships, most of them fraught with tension and disappointment. Alternative Press Magazine's 2010 reader's poll named The Maine its favorite band of 2010.

Opting to avoid any major publicity campaigns and keep a low profile, jazz songstress Madeleine Peyroux maintains a close connection with her modest roots and even busks on the street occasionally. Moving from prominent cities cities around the globe at a young age, Peyroux kind of settled down in Paris when she was 13. Immersing herself in the city's sprawling music scene, Peyroux found herself drawn to various jazz and blues scenes and soon she herself was writing impassioned pieces that have gone on to receive some critical attention.
