Bent Brook Golf Club in Bessemer opened in 1988 and has been providing a great place for the Birmingham area to play golf ever since. The course actually consists of 27 holes - three different nine hole course designs. In addition to the courses, there is an indoor/outdoor instruction center and golf pros on staff to help you improve your game.
Moss Rock is a nature preserve consisting of 349 acres of beautiful land to enjoy. The property is full of streams, waterfalls, geological formations and wildlife, not to mention the abundant flora. The boulder field at Moss Rock is a popular rock climbing spot, and there are over 10 miles of trails for hiking in the preserve as well.
Red Mountain Park consists is 1200 acres full of outdoor fun and excitement. In addition to the 11 hiking trails in the park, there are also ziplining facilities, historic mines, several treehouses and the Hugh Kaul Beanstalk Forest. The park is one of Birmingham's favorite destinations for outdoor adventure.
For an adventure zipping between the treetops of Red Mountain Park, check out the zipline adventure from Red Ore Zip Tours. Your adventure guides will lead you from treehouse to treehouse, along ropes courses and speeding down suspended cables for some blood-pumping fun. To get to the zip tour, you must hike about 10-15 minutes through Red Mountain Park, so you get a bit of fitness in with your fun.
The Aldridge Botanical Gardens are located in Hoover, south of Birmingham. Located on the former Aldridge estate, in addition to the hydrangea-filled gardens the property also features the horticulturalist's former home, now a museum, a pavilion, lake and a hiking trail. The gardens are also a popular location for bird-watching.
This public 18-hole golf course is located at Oak Mountain State Park. The Earl Stone-designed, par 72 course consistently ranks among the top 100 golf courses in the United States, year after year. In addition to the course, there is also a driving range, chipping green, practice green, pro-shop and snack bar all onsite.
Alabaster Municipal Park is home to the famous annual Alabaster Cityfest. It features athletic fields, basketball and tennis courts, pavilions, picnic spots, a playground, restrooms and a snack bar. It also hosts regular soccer matches as well.
Said to be the best place in the state to mountain bike, Oak Mountain State Park offers 9400 acres of beautiful central Alabama sprawl. Its features include 18 miles of bike trails, 20 miles of horse trails, camping, cabins and beaches. There is also a demonstration farm with livestock and a wildlife rehabilitation center. Golfing, boating, fishing, swimming and hiking accommodations are all available as well, and picnic areas and restrooms are situated throughout the grounds. The park is approximately a 30-minute drive south from the city center.
Fair Park Arena is home to the Birmingham Magicians and this 6000 seater multi-purpose arena hosts not only sporting events but also concerts and exhibitions. Most noted is The Greater Alabama Fall Fair and Festival that is held here. The facility is well-equipped and has all the latest amenities. Need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city? Head to the Tannehill Stables where you'll be up on a horse in 30 minutes. Located in Tannehill Historical State Park, the stables offer over 200 acres (80 hectares) of horseback riding trails, tangled in shaded and small creeks. All rides are accompanied by an experienced trail guide, but trails are marked, and the horses are friendly. Come ready to ride in long jeans and comfortable shoes. In cool weather, a jacket or heavy sweatshirt is recommended. Western horseback riding lessons are available. For the true cowboy experience, try your hand at roping. Great experience for families or large groups.
Opened in 1958 in honor of F. Page Seibert, Seibert Stadium is a 6,700-seat all-encompassing facility situated in the Samford University. This stadium boasts of a dynamic acoustic and sound systems which create a unique ambiance for the spectators. In the past, this stadium has staged some unforgettable football tournaments, and has also witnessed a thrilling crowd of 11,189 who were excited to watch Steve McNair and Alcorn State live in action in a 1994 match. Home to the Samford University Bulldogs college football team, this stadium also hosts various cultural and social events. Undoubtedly the most renowned stadium of Birmingham.
Located on the campus of Samford University, Pete Hanna Center is one of the largest multi purpose arenas in Birmingham. With a seating capacity of 5000, it is home to the Bulldogs Basketball team of the Samford University. This 132,000 square foot facility also includes a training room, fitness center and a seminar room. Pete Hanna Center hosts quite a many Sports events, hence when around call and book your tickets to get that adrenaline rush from your favorite game.
