Pictograph Cave is a stunning record and artifact of human habitation within North America, located in southern Montana. The cave was first excavated in 1937, revealing a treasure trove of artifacts and archaeological finds. Among the discoveries were 20,000 specimens of animal bones including bison and elk that were deposited in the course of human predation and consumption. Most important are a series of cave paintings that give the site its name, the drawings ranging from 2100 to 200 years old. These pictographs constitute a sort of timeline, depicting hunting practices from long ago as well as portrayals of Native Americans with rifles that speaks to the dwindling days of their once widespread culture.
