Fort Pemberton Site was a domineering fort and was used to defend the James Island as well gain complete control over the Stono River access. It is named in the honor of Confederate Brig. General John C. Pemberton, a distinguished personality who played an important role in Charleston defenses. A part of the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, this fort is a fine example Confederate military constructions.
