Take a break from dieting and relish this steakhouse's exotic food. Fabulous dishes make up for the plain and drab interiors. Regulars will vouch for the huge chunks of beef in your meals. Ask for a wine, or beer to go along with your food, and enjoy the complete Beef & Bottle experience. Although not a fancy place, this restaurant remains crowded at all times due to its unpretentious attitude and delicious preparations. Reservations are a must.
Tucked away in Charlotte's South End, the Villa Antonio Ristorante is unknown to many locals. In light of its inviting dance floor and classic take on Italian cuisine, it would seem Villa Antonio deserves much more attention. The tuxedo-clad servers manage to give you space and still attend to your every need. Every night there is live Italian-style guitar and piano music. Occasional wine tastings can be turned into informal, inexpensive meals, what with the complimentary buffets. Villa Antonio also has reservable dining facilities, with banquet-style seating for up to 100 guests. See website for tasting calendar and reservation information.
Bedder Bedder & Moore offers its full service deli options from the Montford Shopping Center. Primarily known for their phenomenal catering options, Bedder Bedder & Moore commands a massive list of offerings, mostly permutations of deli meat and cheese housed in a carbohydrate of your choice, or in salad form. Despite this ubiquity, there are some surprising combinations such as the Black and Blue chicken sandwich and the jalapeno roast beef wrap that provide some more unique alternatives. For dine-in customers, the deli offers a complimentary cup of soup.
Customers don't come in here to stare at the lone mural, but for the succulent meat chunks served up by this eatery. And Bill Spoon's has had a loyal clientele since 1963. The seasoning is just right, not too tangy, not too spicy, quite the way locals love it. Tomatoes doesn't even make a special appearance here—instead, you have the in-house zingy vinegar sauce! Sweet tea makes for a nice follow-up.
Maybe the owners felt like they had to do homage to the fact that their restaurant is located in an old transmission shop and car wash. Or maybe they just like beer, bikes and BBQ -- it is, after all, their motto. Mac's Speed Shop is a not-so-intimidating biker bar, serving up good barbecue and micro-brew beer until late in the night. You can also stop in to watch the games; just make sure that if it's football, you're a Panthers fan.
Located in South Park, Maverick Rock Taco showcases home-style South of the Border cooking. Inspired by street-side taquerías in Mexico, bare bricks and fairy lights in its decor are a deliberate attempt to mimic the local vibe. On the menu are staples like shark tacos, queso fundido skillet and chimichurri steak. Wash down the spice with beer, wine or specialty cocktails.
Fiamma Restaurant is an Italian eatery tucked away in the polished streets of Uptown Charlotte, serving as the perfect destination for romantic occasions and little celebrations. Fiamma is one of the more popular Italian restaurants in the neighborhood. The ambiance is reminiscent of a quaint European trattoria. The ambiance is cozily warm aided by dim lighting and comfortable seating. The bar's wine selection is extensive and one of the most sophisticated ones. The service effectively complements its reputation.
The Tremont Music Hall is a hot spot for popular rock and alternative music concerts. The venue can hold up to 1,000 people but maintains a very informal atmosphere with no seats more than 50 feet from the band. It books only original groups playing (among others) Modern Rock, Indie Rock, Punk, Metal, or Roots Rock. Also available within the Tremont is The Casbah, an even more intimate setting that features local and regional musicians. They are open every Friday and Saturday and also during the week as bookings are scheduled. Listings are available on the website.
Pike's is an old fashioned soda fountain that goes the extra mile. Obviously, they offer a full selection of decadent sundaes, shakes, malts, floats, and splits, but their food menu is impressive as well. Classics like the club sandwich, BLTs, and a cheeseburger are complemented by somewhat inventive options like the pimento grilled cheese and honey-pecan fried chicken. The tremendously popular Sunday brunch includes a lengthy omelette menu plus Eggs Benedict, blueberry-pecan french toast, biscuits, gravy, grits and more at the buffet. See website for complete menu and other locations.
Tupelo Honey Cafe is offering a new twist on traditional Southern cooking. Their menu offers an array of dishes that mix modern flavors with old Southern recipes, like a grass-fed beef meatloaf with rosemary tomato shallot gravy or catfish served over goat cheese grits. Best of all, all the dishes are cooked from scratch using farm-fresh produce and hormone-free meats. There's a full bar to give you something to sip while you enjoy your food, and a selection of decadent desserts to finish off your meal.
