Singer/songwriter Shelby Lynne won the Grammy Award in 2001 for Best New Artist, after releasing 6 albums over the course of 13 years. Though it took over a decade for Lynne to breakthrough to a mainstream audience, her alternative country-pop eventually won the acclaim she had fought for. Lynne has since had the opportunity to work with Willie Nelson and has made a few film appearances, including playing Johnny Cash's mother in the Academy Award nominated film Walk the Line.

Funk-metal band Living Colour formed in New York in 1984. As a member of the Rock Coalition Movement, the four piece sang highly political lyrics against American racism and Eurocentrism. While best known for its hard rock song "Cult of Personality" that garnered the group a Grammy, the band also incorporates a wide variety of musical styles into its music, including jazz, thrash, jive and electro. The group disbanded in 1995, but reformed in 2000, with a slightly altered lineup, and continues to tour today.

Missouri-born David Cook is the winner of American Idol's seventh season, and despite a limited output since, is still in the hearts of many. Unlike many of the previous Idol contestants, Cook is decidedly an alternative rock artist, taking after 1990s greats like Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox 20. Cook's debut album was produced by Rob Cavallo, famous for his work with Green Day, My Chemical Romance and Kid Rock.

Foreigner is responsible for creating some of the most memorable juke box anthems of the 1980s. Songs like "Hot Blooded," "Cold as Ice" and "Double Vision" helped cement the British-American band as a premier pop rock group that writes catchy songs with easy-to-sing lyrics. Though the band's popularity peaked in the late-1970s/early-1980s, the group still soldiers on and continues to play its easily recognizable tunes to throngs of adoring, yet somewhat aged fans.
