Based on the novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux, Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera is a musical theater production that has delighted audiences ever since it opened in 1986 in London's West End. Set in 19th-century Paris, the show follows the story of chorus girl Christine Daaé and the mysterious phantom, a disfigured musical genius living in the bowels of the Paris Opera House. While tutoring her on her vocals, the Phantom becomes dangerously obsessed with Christine, and as he begins to make his presence known, the growing tension within the opera house culminates in the Phantom and Christine meeting face to face. The recipient of both the Tony Award and Olivier Award for Best Musical, the show is Broadway's longest-running musical.
The Moscow Ballet prides itself on bringing its talent to an international audience with its annual North American and the Great Russian Nutcracker tours. As the largest Russian ballet tour in North America, the Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker show averages 100 performances during the holiday months of November and December, stopping in major cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Dallas, Baltimore and Chicago. The company engages the local communities of international cities by offering up to 60 children a chance to join Moscow Ballet dancers on stage and perform in walk-on roles. In addition to the Great Russian Nutcracker, the Moscow Ballet presents major narrative ballets during it tours including Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet and quite possibly the most famous Russian ballet Swan Lake.
