    »Mother Hips

    October 25, 2014 11:30 PM

Formed in the early 1990s in the small Northern California town of Chico while its members were attending college there, The Mother Hips have since become a popular staple in the American folk rock community. In what would be an unbelievable experience for any up-and-coming band, The Mother Hips were signed by legendary producer Rick Rubin to his American Recordings label while each of the band's members were still students. Suddenly thrust into the spotlight, the group seemed likely to break out into the mainstream with its engaging blend of alternative county, California soul, folk and old-fashioned rock and roll. And though the band's successes never fully turned it into a household name as some had expected, it remains very successful as both a recording and touring act.

    »Mike Flanigin

    October 25, 2014 10:30 PM

Mike Flanigin is a pianist who grew up on the outskirts of Dallas, in a town called Denton, Texas. Developing a strong affinity for music, Flanigin soon made the move, as most Texas-based musicians do, to Austin, where a thriving night-life scene welcomes any talented musician with open arms. Though Flanigin had only played the piano once before moving to Austin, one night at a music club, he slipped behind the decks of a Hammond B3 organ and was instantly smitten. The instrument connected with Flanigin in some intrinsic way and after three months of practicing with the B3, he was invited to play with a band led by one of the bigger names of the Austin music scene, Doyle Brahmall Sr. It was during this time, Flanigin really started to grow as a jazz musician and after seeing him perform, Steve Wertheimer, a club owner, offered Flanigin the opportunity to serve as band leader for The Continental Gallery, which he was opening up in 2007. Flanigin has since managed to grow by leaps and bounds as an instrumentalist by playing an ardent amount of live shows and is now viewed as a premier Texas session musician who can play nearly any genre with ease.
