Alexandria, VA 22301
Based on Victor Hugo's novel of the same name, Les Miserables is a musical drama composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg with lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel. Set against a backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Miserables tells the story of Jean Valjean, a thief who has just been released after serving 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread. Once he is free, he changes his identity and interacts with several other characters in a complex plot that explores themes of war, love and sacrifice. With no spoken dialogue outside of the musical numbers, the show has achieved immense popularity in the US as well as Europe with songs like "I Dreamed a Dream" and "On My Own," and has won several awards including a Tony for Best Musical.

Other Desert Cities
James Lee Community TheaterMarch 28, 2015 7:30 PM
2855-A Annandale Road
Falls Church, VA 22042
One of the hottest recent tickets on Broadway and a 2012 Tony nominee, "Other Desert Cities" now comes to the nation's capital with a run at the James Lee Community Center. This latest play from Pulitzer Prize finalist Jon Robin Baitz (creator of TV's "Brothers & Sisters") is a smart drama filled with witty repartee that both dazzles and decimates. Brooke Wyeth returns to her politically conservative parents' glamorous Palm Springs home to spend the holidays with them. But the warm desert air turns chilly when news of her upcoming memoir threatens to revive the most painful chapter of the family's history. Perception and reality battle love and mercy as old family wounds are reopened, childhood memories are tested, and the Wyeth clan learns that some secrets can't stay buried forever. Full of deeply felt moments, "Other Desert Cities" brings dysfunctional family drama to new heights. "The New York Times" called it "the best new play on Broadway," and audiences everywhere are finding it both entertaining and insightful.
