Greek-born Avram Pengas is known on the world music scene as both a skilled guitarist and a "bouzouki" virtuoso, shining a spotlight on the traditional Greek instrument. His music creates a rich musical palette rooted in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. A skilled arranger, Pengas draws upon both Eastern and Western rhythms in a dynamic, improvisational style that recalls American jazz. Since opening his nightclub, Noga, in the heart of Greenwich Village in 1979, he has performed in the off-Broadway production of "Hot Klezmer" and has become a staple of New York's downtown music scene. He'll bring is culture-spanning sound to the stage for this Festival of Lights celebration.
