Baltimore is one of America's oldest cities, first established in 1729 along the Chesapeake Bay. The city was the site of many noteworthy events in the American Revolution and the War of 1812, the most notable being the Battle of Baltimore. An American lawyer, Francis Scott Key, saw this battle unfold, and the image of a tattered American flag remaining above the ramparts of nearby Fort McHenry inspired the current national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner. While many consider Ellis Island as the sole entry to America in the 19th Century, Baltimore saw more than its fair share of immigrants, and was number two in the amount of new citizens processed.
