The Grand Rapids Symphony has brought musical excellence and creativity to the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan since 1930. Music Director David Lockington leads the orchestra each year in eight different concert series, all designed to stimulate the imagination. The symphony is known for interactive and lively performances infused with pop culture, making concerts of both classical and contemporary music accessible to all audiences. The Grand Rapids Symphony is deeply invested in community engagement and holds its annual concert, "Symphony with Soul," to feature both local and national African-American artists. A portion of the proceeds goes into the "Young, Gifted & Black Scholarship Fund," a scholarship created by the Symphony in 2005 to support musical training for African American youth in Grand Rapids.

Buckwheat Zydeco
Bell's Back RoomMarch 06, 2015 9:00 PM
355 East Kalamazoo Avenue
Kalamazoo, MI 49007
Over the past century, its been extremely rare for the Zydeco genre to seep into the mainstream musical lexicon. The unique style of music, with cultural ties to Louisiana and the Southern United States, is a form of roots music and has an extremely distinct sound. One musician who has managed to bank off the unusual music style is the accordion player and singer Buckwheat Zydeco, who is one of the only musicians to break into the mainstream by performing Zydeco music. He got his start in the '50s by backing several prominent musicians, and by 1971 he founded his own group called Buckwheat & the Hitchhikers. Since then, he has been taking his Zydeco music review on the road and dazzling audiences across the country.
