The Grand Rapids Symphony has brought musical excellence and creativity to the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan since 1930. Music Director David Lockington leads the orchestra each year in eight different concert series, all designed to stimulate the imagination. The symphony is known for interactive and lively performances infused with pop culture, making concerts of both classical and contemporary music accessible to all audiences. The Grand Rapids Symphony is deeply invested in community engagement and holds its annual concert, "Symphony with Soul," to feature both local and national African-American artists. A portion of the proceeds goes into the "Young, Gifted & Black Scholarship Fund," a scholarship created by the Symphony in 2005 to support musical training for African American youth in Grand Rapids.

Post hardcore band Pianos Become the Teeth was formed in Baltimore in 2006. After releasing its debut album Old Pride with Blackjaw Records in 2009, the band subsequently signed with Topshelf Recordings and re-released its debut effort as a digital download and in CD form, reaching a wider audience the second time around. As a screamo act in the later 2000s, the band has been dubbed as part of "The Wave," a new movement of post hardcore bands with similar styles including Touche Amore, Defeater and Make Do and Mend. Pianos Become the Teeth released its sophomore record I'll Be Damned, in 2011.
