The label "experimental music" is often thrown around quite flippantly nowadays. Rightfully so; there are countless bands out there that make a unique style of music that's creative, innovative, original and, well, experimental. One such act is the Oakland, California based tUnE-yArDs. Helmed by Merrill Garbus, tUnE-yArDs makes a interesting blend of music that shifts genres from song to song. All of the compositions are fairly intricate and even though there is a slight lo-fi tinge to many of the tracks, there is a strong underlying current of adept musicianship running throughout the songs.

    Charlottesville, VA 22902
Brooklyn piano aficionado Marco Benevento has performed as himself and with many other projects, namely the Benevento/Russo Duo with drummer Joe Russo, the Benevento Trio, and Quartet. Marco's music is most closely related to experimental and avant-garde jazz styles, often exploring the possibilities of unusual rhythms and percussion with various guests and collaborators. Marco has also recorded a number of albums with tighter, focused song structures and melodies; songs that ultimately make the rotation in his live sets and are expanded on through improvisation. Marco's album Between the Needles and Nightfall was released in 2010.

As lead singer for the New York garage rock revival outfit The Strokes, Julian Casablancas was the the epitome of everyone's idealized notion of what a front man should be. His rock star swagger and flippant attitude toward the music industry worked perfectly and cememted his place in rock history. In 2009, during The Strokes' hiatus, Casablancas released an album of solo material which is clearly influenced by a nolstalgic '80s electronic sound and is made up of more free-flowing songs than his hits The Strokes.

The show combines elements of Eastern circus traditions with modern Western circus standards, offering a departure from the company's usual neo-circus style that still rings familiar with Cirque fans. Among all of Cirque du Soleil's extravagant acts, Dralion remains one of the company's most acclaimed productions.

    Sts9 Sound Tribe Sector Nine

    110 East Main Street
    Charlottesville, VA 22902
Known simply as STS9, Sound Tribe Sector 9 has risen out of Atlanta, Georgia as one of the most renowned livetronica bands in the world since its formation in the late 1990s. Adjoining jam band rock, layers of keyboards, digitized sounds and elements pulled from funk, jazz, hip-hop and various electronic dance music genres, the band is a staple on the touring and festival circuit and has helped paved the way for so many of its opening acts including Snoop Dog, Bassnectar and Pretty Lights. Though largely considered electronic music, STS9 primarily uses instruments to create its music, relying on the virtuosic abilities of its members to take electronic music to new heights with jam band sensibilities. However, the band forgoes the heavy focus on solos found in traditional jam band music and subscribes more to a groove-based mentality, combining tight rhythms with swaths of electronic textures.
