Bars & Cafes
Stop in at Teotihuacan Mexican Cafe for a variety of fresh, well-prepared dishes that showcase the culinary delights of Mexico. The bright serape tablecloths, indoor fountain and Mayan mural create a festive dining atmosphere that is popular with a variety of diners. Specialties include roasted pork loin chunks and the outstanding fresh snapper in a creamy wine, mustard and garlic-spiked sauce. You can also try one of the Mexican beers.
Typical of a dive bar, D&T Drive Inn has a hip ambiance, and is often filled by youngsters staying in the neighborhood. A small bar with stools, a black board with scribbled menu and a juke box in the corner adorn this little place, while giving it a casual and local feel. With 50 beers like American Lager, Hefeweizen and Imperial Stout on tap, this place offers a humble food menu, that is perfect to go with the eclectic range of beers. Deviled Ham and Ritz Crackers, Pickle Plate and Stuffed Cherry Peppers are some of the decent dishes that customers seem to like the most. Drop by to have a large mug of your favorite beer, as you chat away the evening with your buddies.
Wear comfortable shoes and light clothing when you visit this casual Heights nightclub, because it will not be long before you hit the dance floor. Everything from blues to psychedelic rock is featured at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar, and on Thursday nights customers are treated to a jam session with some of Houston's favorite musicians. The interior's funky but fun, and there is a back patio area where you can cool off. Dan Electro's serves only beer and wine, but if you bring your own bottle, they will provide the set-ups.
Fitzgerald's is a very popular two-story nightclub and bar which has been entertaining crowds for a long time. Lots of live music shows are hosted in this club covering all the genres of music from hip-hop and rap to the blues. It has a wine bar and an outdoor seating facility. It has been home to a majority of the famous artists and celebrities like Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZ Top, Stained, Etta James, Dennis Miller, Cheryl Crow and Jay Leno. Whether you are on the first or the second floor, the loud and ecstatic music will make your feet tap to the rhythm.
Burger joints in Houston are serious business. With sharp competition like Christian's Tailgate, a proper Heights (gastro) Icehouse, other burger-makers in town better up their game. Their White Oak location was perfectly adapted to its surroundings, with its Austin-like semi-open-air structure, which is different from their proper sports bar facility in Midtown. But the food is legit, as proven by getting voted Houston Press's Best Burger for three consecutive years. Go get a Famous Burger and put onion rings on it. As a blast from the past, try the Steak Fingers, which I haven't seen since the 1980's. Food aside, Christian's is a perfect place for a beer and a good time. -Adam Rosen
Onion Creek is the ultimate neighborhood hangout with a little something for everyone, regardless of the time of day. Need some homemade waffles with fresh fruit and coffee to start your day right? Maybe an O.C. Poboy to get you through the afternoon? Or the Frito Pie, a cold beer on tap, and the game on the tube for dinner to make everything right with the world? Don't worry if you think you missed Happy Hour—it goes until 11p on Monday nights.
Anytime is a good time to head to Dry Creek. Locals often while away the weekend here and enjoy exceptional coffee and a good meal under the shade of an umbrella. Bring your own beer or wine, and lazily observe traffic from this refurbished 1930s gas station. Bellies are filled with creatively topped burgers, crispy fries and onion rings, and healthy (or not so healthy) salads, including one laden with delicious fried chicken tenders. Families, friends, kids, and the occasional dog often frequent this popular spot. It’s also situated perfectly to pop in and grab a latte to go on the way to work. -Gemma Amato

People come here for the salty atmosphere and stick-to-your-ribs food. The grill attracts a lot of police officers from the nearby police station that are looking for hearty home-style meals and they certainly find that at this popular eatery. Open daily for Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Pork chops as thick as a man's fist, liver and onions, fried chicken livers, biscuits and gravy. Huge breakfast specials with all the trimmings; fabulous steam table lunch and mouth watering dinners.
The locals say this is one of the best cups of espresso in town and that's because this cafe is serious about coffee. The wide variety of beans and means of brewing they offer have one thing in common: quality. Not a fancy place, and not designed for those craving a corporate coffee drink, Catalina Coffee is an authentic coffee lover's dream.
Walter's is among the best bars in Houston. Celebrated rock and metal bands from around the world make sure to include Walter's in their list while touring. In spite of being such a distinguished place, the atmosphere inside is very relaxed and inviting. The 62-inch plasma T.V. in the club itself is enough of an attraction for the locals. The bar offers a premium collection of spirits and beers. Watch live performances, catch up with your friends and do a lot more at Walter's.
Start happy hour a little early with a nice glass of vino from the extensive, international wine list at the Boom Boom Room. Novices can be sure to trust the bartender to make an excellent recommendation. Stay for one of the best paninis around, served on artisanal bread or try a cheese plate. Later on Saturday nights, feed the soul with some excellent live jazz while cozying up to your favorite someone du jour. The Moravian star-shaped lights and candles set the perfect mood for discreet smooching. The mood is chill, the décor is bohemian, the wine flows smoothly.
