Windber was born in 1897, and named after Charles Berwind who established a prominent coal company that employed hundreds of migrant workers from as far as Hungary, Russia and Italy. His family invested their wealth in designing a town replete with churches, banks, schools, stores and the gorgeous Arcadia Theater which showed Vaudeville and silent films. Time has passed but Windber has managed to retain its charm through the old coal factories and brick buildings which tell the story of a glorious industrial town that fed the families of thousands of its people.
