»Urban Threads 2014 Annual Appeal

December 18, 2014

December 2014   Dear Friends   From studio workshops to after-school programs to cafés all over the city, Urban Threads Studios 2014 has been full of growth, excitement, and of course, creativity. As we take a break from the seasonal rush and reflect on the past twelve months, we are filled with gratitude for you, our wonderful UTS community. Thanks to you, weve been able to celebrate milestones and make progress on every aspect of UTS. At our home studio in the Bridgeport Arts Center, we continue to offer several classes each week in the textile arts sewing, felting, batik, embroidery, and so many more.   We hosted a table at Renegade Craft Fairs September Market offering hundreds of passers-by the opportunity to try their hand at indigo dyeing. Our popular Café Tour series brought textile arts into cafés across the city, offering free classes to any interested might-be textile artisans while enjoying the casual community only a coffeehouse can provide.   Our youth-oriented programming has expanded as we offered our first summer camp in August and Saturday morning textile adventures throughout the fall. Our after-school programming now features three options, each with its own curriculum: Textile Arts Techniques, Everyday Textile Arts, and StemPLUS. Most exciting of all, Urban Threads Studio was hand-picked to partner with Chicago Public Schools and bring textile arts to teens. Urban Runway launches January 2015, and 120 CPS students will have the unique opportunity to combine textiles and technology, fashion and finance, art and science. It is no small feat to be selected as a CPS partner, and Urban Runway is both our biggest opportunity and greatest challenge yet. To give the students a realistic entry into the world of textile design, our studio will require some significant upgrades a 3D printer, tablets, and wearable electronics.   Others organizations took note of our work too. Goodcity continued investing in us, both as our fiscal partner and in a mentoring capacity. We received a 2014 Champion Grant from Community Bank of Oak Park River Forest, allowing us to share textile classes to teens, moms, and grandmothers being served by Family Focus in Lawndale. And in October we were chosen as a partner for Chicago Artists Month, a city-wide celebration of the creative pulse of the city.   In 2014, we reached nearly 700 students and artisans, more than twice as many as we reached last year. In 2015, we ask for your support as we seek to double that number once again. Express your love for art and opportunities to share art with everyone. Support bringing creativity to schools, providing low-cost opportunities to strengthen skills, and building community where we live. Be a patron of Urban Runway and directly impact the lives of CPS students this January. Make a statement to support all the joy and loveliness and texture brought into our lives through the textile arts.   Dont miss an opportunity to brighten this community we share.   Thank you!   Ilona Mestril & Michelle Santoro Executive Director & Artistic Director   P.S. Join us in bringing textile arts to under-served kids in Chicago Public Schools! Donate $100 today and spread the joy of creativity.   P.P.S. Well be at Renegade Craft Fairs December Market at the Bridgeport Art Center, our home turf this weekend, December 6 and 7! Stop by for some beautiful hand-made holiday gifts or just to say hello.
