Conceived in 2010 by various musicians formerly involved in shoegaze and grindcore bands, Deafheaven shifted its sound into territory the musicians hadn't forayed into: black metal, post-rock and screamo. While the San Francisco-based band didn't initially intend to release its music, it eventually submitted a demo to a few blogs and was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback. Since then the five-piece has signed to Deathwish Inc. and has begun touring its music around the US, playing at various festivals and consistently winning over audiences.

    John Hiatt and The Combo

In 2008 John Hiatt was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting by the Americana Music Association, fittingly, for it has been this field where Hiatt has found the majority of his success. While he has released more than 15 albums, it seems that his songs only see the appreciation they deserve when other people sing them. Lucky for John, those "other people" have consisted of musicians like Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Jimmy Buffet, Mandy Moore and many others. This is not to say that Hiatt's work cannot stand on its own; his musical ability is readily apparent in all he does and this makes for a good show indeed.

    Sean Rowe
    Jammin JavaSeptember 23, 2014 7:30 PM
    227 Maple Avenue East
    Vienna, VA 22180
Singer/songwriter Sean Rowe consistently grabs comparisons to the likes of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Bruce Spingsteen--all rather hefty names to live up to. The New York based musician does not waver at these name drops, however, and instead is able to convey these greats, while still remaining an individual with his own unique brand of music. Rowe's voice is the most arresting aspect of his music, and imparts a sense of wisdom and experience in a deep baritone, which pairs beautifully with his sparse Americana that can often consist solely of an acoustic guitar. Rowe began performing seriously in 2005 and has since signed to the respected Anti- record label.

One of the most-anticipated new plays of 2014, "Colossal" is a story of love, family and emotional and physical endurance. Structured like a football game, with four quarters, plus pre-game and halftime shows, it tells the story of Young Mike, a college football player who took a hit in a game that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Throughout the course of the play, he remembers the accident with the help of a live, nine-person football squad onstage. The play stars Michael Patrick Thornton, best known from his role on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" spin-off, "Private Practice".

The economic ravages of 1930s New York threaten to destroy the tenuous ties that bind a working-class family in social dramatist Clifford Odets' ("The Flowering Peach") acclaimed Depression-era drama. First produced in 1935, "Awake and Sing!" tells the passionate and ultimately hopeful story of the Bergers, a family of Jewish immigrants living in the Bronx, as they deal with the hardships of the era. Bessie, the Berger matriarch, is even prepared to crush her children's dreams in order to keep the struggling clan intact, but the irrepressible spirit of youth refuses to be extinguished in Odets' soaring, timeless ode to the American working-class.
