Built before the Battle of Lynchburg, Fort Early is named after General Jubal Early. It was built with an objective to protect and guard the outskirts of Lynchburg from the Union Army. This earthen fort is still intact and in 1919, the Jubal Early Monument was raised to honor General Early. The monument as well as the fort site are listed in the National Register of Historic Places and are open to visitors.
