The Thomas Road Baptist Church was started in 1956 by a small group of 35 members. Today, its strength has grown up to 20,000 active members. The church started Liberty University, then known as the Lynchburg Baptist College. The church has programs for adults and children that involves them in worship and also teaches them how to live a life of faith and happiness. Virginia University of Lynchburg is a historical coeducational university that offers students religious studies and a Doctorate of Ministry Programme. The university is in agreement with Liberty University to allow students to take up courses that are not offered in the university. The university also has different sports for men and women.
The St. Paul's Church is a historic church built in 1891. Spread over an area of 1 acre (0.40 hectare), it displays the Richardsonian Romanesque style of architecture. The church is home to Lynchburg's most ancient Episcopal parish. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It has continued to serve from the time of its inception and holds masses even today.
The Court Street Baptist Church is one of the largest churches in Lynchburg. It was constructed in 1880 and was designed by R.C. Burkholder. The church is considered to be a testament to the African-American Baptist population of Lynchburg, and is one of the tallest structures in downtown Lynchburg.
The Jones Memorial Library is a historic library building which was established in 1906. Built in the Classical Revival style, it continues to function till date. The library has a large collection of books and other documents which includes family histories, tax records and census records. The structure of the building is grand and looks appealing.
Famous as Lynchburg's first streetcar suburb, Rivermont Historic District is made up of a mix of residential and commercial buildings. Many architectural styles from the 19th and 20th centuries are evident, and the area includes buildings by many of the city's top architects of the time. Jones Memorial Library is a well-known building here.
At the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains is Virginia Episcopal School which has architecture of the Colonial and Georgian Revival style. The school is coeducational and has students from all over the world who come to study 9th and 12th grades or college. The school's campus has gymnasiums, classroom buildings, halls and an art center. The school promotes liberal and fine arts and athletics.
The Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church is one of the most relevant and significant churches in the Bedford County in Virginia. The church site stands high in the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1844 and the ancient church occupies a land cover of 3.8 acres (1.5 hectares). It is a superb model of the Greek Revival style of architecture. It is a single storied building with three bays.
