The Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory is a huge expanse of lush green land that includes three domes built on the lines of a beehive that are connected to each other by a central lobby. Each of these domes has a diameter of 140 feet and a height of 85 feet! These domes harbor a plethora of plant life from all the continents of the world under their canopies. The Arid Dome houses a collection of cacti, shrubs and other plants that are native to different deserts in the African and the American Continents. The Tropical Dome features plants and flowers found in the tropical areas and rainforests, while the Floral Show Dome offers seasonal displays of various plants. It is located in downtown Milwaukee along the Lake Michigan shoreline and it hosts many of the city's festivals, including Summerfest. Moreover, this 80-plus acre park has five permanent stages and an amphitheater which makes it the most sought-after space for outdoor concerts. It is centrally located in JuneauTown, right next to the Cathedral of St. John, which gives the park its name. The city gave the park status in 1939 and changed the name from Courthouse Square to the present one. The square used to house a jail and courthouse, and it was the scene for the famous event in 1854 when about 5,000 locals came together to protest the arrest of a runaway slave, Joshua Glover. Though the courthouse and jail are gone, the square still holds a prominent place in the city's soul due to it is role as a venue for various popular events like Jazz In The Park and other summer fests.
