World's second largest electric coal shovel.
While it may appear to be a humble patch of grass in an anonymous suburb in rural Kansas, what transpired at the site of the Norman No. 1 Oil Well changed the history of not only the United States, but the world at large. It was in this spot that the first oil well in the Mid-Continent oil field - the largest oil field until the discovery of petroleum in the Middle East - was tapped. After supplying a boom town and its numerous workers with plenty of drilling opportunity, the well fell into disuse in the early 20th Century. In the mid-1970s, the site of the well was added to the national historic register, and now houses a museum that tells the story of this humble yet important place.
