    »Fiddler On The Roof

    October 02, 2014 7:30 PM

The internationally-renowned, nine-time Tony Award-winning musical Fiddler on the Roof illustrates the story of a Jewish family living in 1905 Tsarist Russia. Centered around a poor Orthodox Jewish fiddler named Tevye, his wife Golde and their five daughters, the story explores the question of marrying for love or financial security and how to preserve tradition in a changing world. The production's smart and gripping material is sewn through with iconic songs, including "If I were a Rich Man," and "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," renditions of which have made their way into film, popular culture and even contemporary music.

    »Pixies

    October 03, 2014 7:00 PM

Despite never breaking into mainstream audiences, Pixies is recognized as one of the influential American bands to emerge out of the late 1980s alternative rock scene. Since the release of its debut album Come On Pilgrim, in 1987, the group has used its strong punk and indie rock-sensibility to forge its own brand of rock music. After surviving a breakup in 1993 and returning in 2004, Pixies is still widely credited for pioneering the rapid rise of grunge and alternative rock in the 1990s.

    »Eugene Ballet: Cinderella

    October 04, 2014 2:00 PM

Based on the classic folk tale by French author Charles Perrault, Cinderella follows the story of a young woman whose life of hardships is turned upside down. Though there have been thousands of adaptations for both the stage and big screen in several different languages, the foundation of the tale is often left untouched. A common version depicts Cinderella living a ragged life under the control of her stepmother and stepsisters, who are jealous of Cinderella's beauty and grace. When Cinderella's cruel family prevents her from attending the royal ball for Prince Charming, an attempt by the King and Queen to find a bride for their son, her fairy godmother comes to her aid and transforms her rags into a beautiful gown. Cinderella shows up to the ball and immediately catches the eye of Prince Charming, but she is forced to abruptly leave the party at midnight, when she returns to her true form, before the Prince can catch her name. A tale of hope and overcoming obstacles, Cinderella is an enduring narrative that has proven its lasting power through centuries of storytelling.
