    »Coheed and Cambria

    September 16, 2014 7:00 PM

The New York-based band Coheed and Cambria came together in 1995 to play progressive alternative rock. With a distinct creative direction, the band only releases concept albums that tell the ongoing science fiction story called The Armory Wars. Starting with the band's 2002 debut studio album The Second Stage Turbine Blade, front man Claudio Sanchez has penned all of Coheed and Cambria's lyrics, and all of his material for the band has been transcribed into a novel and a series of comic books. While the band offered a melodic post hardcore sound on its earlier work, it shifted to more of a progressive, metal-inspired sound on Good Apollo, I'm Burning IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness. The 2005 album is arguably Coheed and Cambria's most successful album, and it set the tone for the band's subsequent work, including The Afterman: Ascension and The Afterman: Descension, from 2012 and 2013 respectively.

    »Earth

    September 16, 2014

Earth is a band from Seattle, Washington that makes a unique style of music by blending drone doom with psychedelic rock tendencies.Formed in 1989, the band would go on to pioneer a unique sound thatcapitalizedoff of the enveloping sonics of drone sounds as well as stoner rock riffing. Though Earth broke up in 1997, it returned in 2005 with a slightly different--slower and more melodic--sound that seemed to be a direct reflection of the band member's musical maturity.

    »Shabazz Palaces

    September 16, 2014

Shabazz Palaces is an abstract hip-hop project based out of Seattle, Washington. Comprised of percussionist Tendai Maraire, engineer Erik Blood and former Digable Planets emcee, Ishmael Butler, the group breaks free of many of hip-hop's typical molds, creating a moody, psychedelic style that should appeal to fans of alternative versions of the genre. The group's odd tendencies are compounded by eccentric live shows that includes trippy costumes and masks. Blood's production sounds both modern and vintage, pulling not only from trending genres such as dubstep, but also from classic laid-back jazz and soul. Digable Planets' fans should be plenty familiar with Butler's smooth flow already, but new listeners will find that his on-point delivery keeps the more glum, icy aspects of Shabazz Palaces' music firmly grounded in accessible territory.

    »Betty Soo

    September 16, 2014 8:30 PM

Singer-songwriter BettySoo has a knack for shocking audiences, walking on stage as a petite Asian-American and belting out soulful folk ballads with a Texas twang. Singing of love, heartbreak and remorse, BettySoo covers the standard topics of the female country musician, but includes elements of gospel, easy listening jazz and modern folk that set her music apart. BettySoo released her first album in 2005 and has continued to win over the Americana music world with each subsequent release. Based out of Austin, Texas, the musician performs regularly around the city - occasionally solo, and often with a large backing band that doesn't drown out but instead only bolsters her powerful voice.
