Patti Labelle is an American soul singer who has cultivated a classic catalog over her decades-long career. Getting her start as the lead vocalist of Patti Labelle and the Bluesbelles, she embarked on a solo career in 1977 and introduced herself to the world with her self-titled debut album. Capturing the full spectrum of her vocals, the record garnered critical laudation and catapulted Labelle onto the world stage. Releasing massive hits over the years, such as 1982's "If Only You Knew," and 1989's "If You Asked Me To," she finally earned her first of several Grammys in 1992 for her LP Burnin'. Leading with her powerhouse R&B vocals and virtually ignoring popular music trends, Labelle has managed to traverse the entertainment landscape as a musical icon for over half a century.

»Engelbert Humperdinck

January 17, 2015 8:00 PM

Born Arnold Dorsey, UK crooner Engelbert Humperdinck knew early on that he wanted to be a musician, but had difficulty finding success after a decade of singing in night clubs. However, in the late 1960s, after changing his given name to that of the German composer, Humperdinck signed to Decca, which put out his single "Release Me," a track that topped the charts in the US and UK, impressively preventing the Beatles song "Strawberry Fields Forever" from ever obtaining the number one slot in the band's native country. With his smoothly sung lyrics about love and his charming good looks, the singer was bestowed with the nickname "King of Romance," and to this day continues to perform to smitten fans around the world.
