Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra: A Strauss Odyssey
Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing ArtsSeptember 19, 2014 7:30 PM
    1419 Basin Street
    New Orleans, LA 70116
Based in New Orleans, The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1991 and remains the only full-time professional orchestra in the Gulf South. Led by Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto, the company offers a 36 week concert season that includes a variety of classical pieces, contemporary compositions and casual classics as well as family, education and outreach concerts. Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the members were forced to perform at a different location due to the flooding of its longtime base, the Orpheum Theater. Nevertheless, the orchestra had continued to move forward, raising awareness of the disaster and using it to fuel its contemporary classical sound.

    Dax Riggs
    One Eyed JacksSeptember 19, 2014 9:00 PM
    615 Toulouse Street
    New Orleans, LA 70130
Growing up as a rock guitarist and vocalist in Indiana, Dax Riggs began his career as a member of various metal bands. Involvement with doom and sludge metal groups such as Acid Bath and Daisyhead & the Mooncrickets, helped Riggs hone his chops, and ultimately led him to discover a surprising amount of range in his voice, which would begin to take his music in other directions. With the intensity of his past projects still somewhat intact, Riggs' 2010 solo album, Say Goodnight to the World, nevertheless marked a shift in his sound. Heavy blues-rock and creepy atmospheric ballads set the tone of the album, but it's the sprawling wail of Riggs voice that quickly becomes the focal point.

Michael Lawrence Taylor, who performs and releases music under his Mystikal guise, is a rapper and actor from New Orleans. After releasing his eponymous debut album in 1994, Mystikal soon found himself in conflict with a number of other New Orleans-based rappers who were affiliated with Cash Money Records, includingLil Wayne, U.N.L.V. and B.G. After trading insults on a number of diss tracks, Mystikal proved himself as an individual who's not afraid to stand up for his integrity. Continuing to release material that finds him evolving and growing as a musician, Mystikal has proven to be one of the moretalentedSouthern hip-hop artists of his generation.
