DJ SS is an English electronic producer and drum and bass DJ. Interested in music from an early age, he immersed himself in breakdancing, electro music and hip-hop culture as a teenager in the 1980s. Soon, he turned his attention to drum and bass music, helping develop the form throughout the 1990s while becoming a fixture of the UK rave scene. In addition to crafting his original drum and bass productions and remaining an in-demand DJ worldwide, DJ SS helps operate Formation Records, a label he co-founded and now heads.

»3/26: Pianos Become The Teeth, Comrades, Everyone Dies In The End & Stay In

March 26, 2015 6:30 PM

STRANGE MATTER & Stay Sweet Records PRESENT... PIANOS BECOME THE TEETH are many things but they aren't the type of band that are simple to describe. Correspondingly if the Baltimore, Maryland, based act exploded on the scene with their 2009 debut Old Pride and gained national attention with 2011s The Lack Long After, their third album Keep You sees them taking a brave step forward to craft a musical statement that truly transcends genres. Obviously the biggest difference between Keep You and Pianos Become The Teeths previous albums is Durfey's approach, which sees him trading the throat-gutting screams of the band's early releases with cleaner, more intelligible vocals. However anyone who has followed the band's trajectoryspecifically the song "Hiding" from their 2013 split with Touché Amorécan trace the way the band's sound has evolved from a melodic hardcore act to a group who create heaviness and weight via raw emotion instead of distortion. They will be joined by local rippers COMRADES and EVERYONE DIES IN THE END, and new Richmond emo outfit STAY IN! 6:30 Doors // 7:30 Sounds | $10 in Advance // $12 Day of Show | ALL AGES

»Swans

March 26, 2015 8:30 PM

Born in the New York no-wave scene of the early 1980s, Swans is a post punk band led by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. Though the band remained a well kept secret of the underground music scene, the group went on to influence several experimental and art rock groups in the subsequent decades. With spooky instrumentals and baneful vocals, Swans creates an extremely menacing style of music that has been kept alive by its cult-like following. Though the band has experienced a large amount of line up changes and even broke up in 1997, Swans reformed in 2010 and began to once again spread its no wave sound to a new generation of fans.
