Testing Season A film screening and discussion with The School Project Sponsored by Collaborative City & the Illinois Humanities Council    Join us for Testing Season, the fourth episode of The School Project a documentary series on public education in Chicago. This 10-minute film explores the hot topic of school testing from the boycotts of 2014 to the implementation of the PARCC test rolling out this spring, and the grassroots movement to push back against high stakes standardized tests in Illinois and around the country. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with community leaders, educators, and education experts, moderated by Linda Lenz of Catalyst Chicago. Watch the film's trailer here: Event: Testing Season When: Tuesday, March 31st Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Program begins at 5:00 p.m. Where: The Chicago Cultural Center 77 E. Randolph Street Chicago, IL 60602 Event is free and open to the public; RSVP required Please arrive early to ensure entry  About Testing Season Last year the CPS "testing season" was dramatic, with a record number of parents opting out of the soon to be discarded ISAT. Teachers at two schools refused to administer the test, resulting in CPS issuing threats of disciplinary action. This year the opt-out movement is focusing its efforts on "parking the PARCC"; delaying the implementation of the new state test. The concerns about the roll out of this new test are so widespread that even CPS CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett has requested a waiver from the state, which was denied. Jumping off from the Opt Out movement, this segment looks at the history, philosophical underpinning, implementation and costs of standardized testing. About The School Project The School Project is a six-part documentary series on public education released in segments over the 2014-2015 school year. This series will look at local perspectives on the recent mass school closings in Chicago, the expansion of charter schools, the controversy surrounding standardized testing, school discipline policies, and the history of reforms and educational models. The School Project examines the roots of these issues and how each policy impacts the wider school community in Chicago and its implications on a national level. PBS station WTTW broadcasts each segment during their flagship Chicago Tonight News Program, and the Sun-Times, and Catalyst Chicago contribute additional web-based content. For all episodes in the series, subscribe to The School Project on YouTube.
