Over the course of her long and storied career, singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco has become both a feminist icon and a godmother to the alternative folk movement. Born in Buffalo, New York in 1970, DiFranco lends her staccato guitar playing style and rhythmically complex lyrical phrasing to large and varied songbook just as full of tunes delving into her rich personal life with breathtaking honesty as it is packed with vehement, left-wing political tracts. Her signature style—shaved head, piercings and tattoos—has largely been adopted as the de rigur uniform for many of her alt-folk brethren.

Greensky Bluegrass is a bluegrass band from Kalamazoo, Michigan that was formed in 2000 as a three-piece outfit. While recording its debut album Less Than Supper in 2004, the band decided to fill its soundscape by hiring a bassist and dobro player. After the band acquired these two additional instrumentalists, it managed to anchor its jangly sound and gave its live performances depth. Greensky Bluegrass released the first volume of its live album series, All Access in 2009, followed by Volume 2 in 2010. With its refined sound, the band began to reach out to a broader audience, particularly with its fourth and most acclaimed studio album, Handguns. The effort debuted in 2011 at number three on US Bluegrass charts.

San Diego band Tribal Seeds is one of large contingent of California-based bands devoted to the continued proliferation of Jamaica's greatest gift to the music world, reggae. Combining live instrumentation with electronic components, Tribal Seeds draw on ska, as well as a more recent strain of UK dance music called dubstep. As is the case with even the earliest Jamaican reggae music, bass is one of the foremost draws of reggae music and its major influence on today's electronic music. The Tribal Seeds have built themselves an intimate, loyal following upon these weighty bass foundations, and tour extensively as a result.

Brantley Gilbert is a country rock singer/songwriter from Jefferson, Georgia who broke onto the scene running in 2005, doing his best to raise his status on the ultra-competitive country music industry. Although it took a few years, Gilbert's efforts culminated with the release of his debut album Modern Day Prodigal Son in 2009, which became a fair success on the country music charts. However, a few short years later, Brantley Gilbert was able to reach the heights of numerous US music charts in addition to country with the release of his breakout follow-up album Halfway to Heaven in 2011.
